Sustainability Measures Cost Companies

Sea levels are rising. Temperatures are increasing. Clean water is scarce. Fossil fuels are decreasing. Carbon emissions are choking the environment.

So why aren’t we seeing more efforts towards organizational sustainability measures around the globe? What is stopping companies from progressing towards green initiatives? Why aren’t more multinational corporations rolling out actions and programs to minimize carbon footprint and degradation?

The answer seems to lie in ‘profit motive’ – making money is more attractive than saving environment. But the answer isn’t really that simple or straight-forward. “If companies were to have to pay for the costs they created, it would actually wipe out profit,” explains Richard Mattison, CEO of sustainability research firm Trucost (Hepler & Grady, 2016).

So, how do we go forward? What is the answer to this dilemma?
