ReBitVlogs Program

With the aim to go beyond attitudes and make a real impact in students’ behavior, inspired by Perlman (2008), Prentice (2014) and Drumwright, et al. (2015) to focus on Behaviour Ethics when teaching ethics, I began to explore evidence of immersive technology (Bonasio, 2018) that would help me assist students to go beyond books and concepts to impact their attitude and ultimately behavior in their personal learning space. Of importance and relevance became millennial students’ constant need to “read/write/watch/listen” anytime, anywhere (Graetz, 2006). My solution was the ReBitVlogs program (Responsible Business and IT Use Video Blogs) that I conceptualized in Spring 2017 as an innovative blended platform to engage students in discussions on pressing issues by linking them to real world, creating an environment of awareness, facilitating dialogue towards a sustainable, responsible future. The product of the initiative would be a vlog (video blog) - a teaching and learning aid that would add depth and flavor to any ethics classroom discussion on responsible business and IT use.

My inspiration for developing such a tool was also derived from Mary Gentile’s book Giving Voice to Values: How to Speak Your Mind When You Know What’s Right. Gentile used a series of drawings that were transformed into short blogs followed by case studies, discussion questions and such to create a teaching tool that has been found highly effective. However, I found through my research and dealings with students that millennials respond well to other millennials, particularly when engaging in discussions of ethics and morality (Stein, 2013). What’s more, I wanted to tap into their love for all things gadget and constantly interacting through the screen (Stein, 2013). So, I decided to involve the students in every step of the process of developing the video blogs.

Program

I invited the UOWD Business Society (student club) to join me in running small competitions on campus for the ethics course students. These competitions have a different theme every semester. The competitions take varying forms such as story-telling, poster making, debates, public-speaking and so on. The themes are always current and relevant to the students. Besides acting as awareness initiatives, these campus-oriented activities also help identify teams of students who then get a chance to prepare and join a panel discussion with peers, academics and experts to converse on the chosen theme. This is called the ReBitVlogs Majlis. The majlis is captured in video shoot, edited and prepared as a vlog, with notes on the topic and related discussion questions.

This innovative program has become highly successful in the one and a half years since its inception. First, Professor Mario Fernando; co-lecturer and QA at University of Wollongong, Australia for one of the ethics courses I teach; voiced his interest in the program. This led to opening the program to invite other universities which resulted in HCT and Zayed University lecturers joining in with their students. Then, I extended the program with Professor Mario, applied for and received the Council for Australian Arab Relations (CAAR) Grant to bring five exchange students from UOW to participate in the program at University of Wollongong in Dubai. The success of the program was greatly appreciated by UOW Faculty of Business that led to their serious amendments to the subject at UOW to include

(1) such an involved assessment and

(2) a study tour in the future.

As lead, I have also successfully received the Educational Strategies Educational Fund (ESDF) Teaching and Learning Grant from UOW with Prof Mario to conduct in-depth studies and produce scientific data recording the positive impact and effectiveness of the teaching innovation.

Other evidence of this positive impact includes student feedback and decreasing fail rates as learning has moved past books and increased student engagement to the topics
